William Wayne McAllister, age 77, of Hancock, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014, at Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, Md.

Born August 6, 1936, in Big Pool, Md., he was the son of Hazel Turner McAllister, of Clear Spring, Md., and the late Floyd McAllister.

He was a 1954 graduate of Clear Spring High School; he attended Hagerstown Junior College; and he served in the U.S. Army until 1964.

He retired from the Maryland Correctional Training Center, achieving the rank of Major in 1980, and then retired from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, as Warden, in 1994.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, in Big Pool, Md.; a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post #26 American Legion; a member of the James W. Bowers Lodge #173 AF & AM; and a member of the Tonoloway Rod and Gun Club.

He loved hunting, fishing, and working in his garden.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Mills McAllister; two sons, Scott McAllister and friend, Janet, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and Donald Burnett and wife, Robin, of Hancock; three daughters, Tina Younker and husband, Sam, of Hancock, Brenda Pittman and husband, Basil, of Newburg, Pa., and Carol Burnett and friend, Tammy Miller, of Hopewell, Pa.; one sister, Charlene Bragunier and husband, Donald, of Clear Spring, Md.; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Erica Dawn Burnett.

A service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 12:00 p.m., at the Hancock United Methodist Church. Rev. Michael Bynum will officiate. Burial will be in the Alpine United Methodist Cemetery, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and at the Church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon.

The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.
