Samuel Jacob Shirley, Jr., age 86, of Hancock, died on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at his home.
Born December 26, 1930, in Clear Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel Jacob, Sr. and Elsie (Pierce) Shirley; and the husband of Robin R. (Starliper) Shirley.
He retired in 1992 from his employment as a heavy-equipment operator at the Hancock landfill.
He was a Christian, and h e enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing bingo.
Besides his wife, he is also survived by three sons, Daniel Shirley, of Hagerstown, Md., Tony Shirley, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., and George (Rusty) Moats, of Clear Brook, Va.; four daughters, Debra Mitchell, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kathy Shives, of Hancock, Md., Debbie Lawyer and Dorita Davis, both of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sisters, Anna Summers, of Williamsport, Md., and Betty West, of Chambersburg, Pa.; seventeen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Sammy Shirley and Calvin Shirley; seven brothers, Calvin, Ernest, Bob, Dave, Archie, Ed and Wade; and two sisters, Gladys Mann and Helen French.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 31, 2016, at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, in Hancock, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the doors will be open after 10:00 a.m.
Funeral services will be private.
