Robert Carl “Pappy” Golden, age 98, of Warfordsburg, Pa., died peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at the home of his daughter.

Born December 3, 1917, in Warfordsburg, he was the son of the late Daniel E. and Nettie (Andrews) Golden, and the husband of the late Ida Marie (Webster) Golden, whom he married March 4, 1942.

“Pappy” was a lifetime dairy farmer.  He loved his chosen profession and enjoyed the comforts and hardships of life as a farmer.  Even after retirement, he still enjoyed being nearby when work was in progress, until the end when the “gate was closed.”  After his farming days, he was able to begin traveling and visited 47 of the 50 states. He especially enjoyed visiting Branson, Mo.

He was a lifelong member of the Warfordsburg United Methodist Church, and was superintendent for many years, and served on many committees during his younger years.

“Pappy” was also a charter member of the Warfordsburg Lions Club since its beginning in 1953. He thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the projects over the years, and become known as the “candy man” when he made his rounds selling Christmas and Easter candy.  He was presented with the distinguished Melvin Jones Fellow Award for dedicated humanitarian services by the Lions Club International Foundation.  During his years, he held various offices in the Club.

Robert was active in the Warfordsburg Grange, and also the Fulton County Pomona Grange, where he held various offices over the years.  “Pappy” was also a member of the Warfordsburg  I.O.O.F.

Robert also attended the Warfordsburg Senior Center from its’ beginning, and enjoyed the trips when he was able to attend.

Robert is survived by a daughter, Roberta Golden, of Warfordsburg; and two sons, Donald E. Golden and wife, Helen, and Thomas A. Golden and wife, Marleen, of Warfordsburg; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by a brother, William Herbert Golden, of Arlington, Va.; half-sisters, Leitha Myers, and Catherine Crist, of Warfordsburg, Cornelia Mellott of Needmore, Pa., and Mabel Mellott Williams, of Everett, Pa.; and half-brothers, Roy Golden, of Hancock, Md., and Austin Golden, of St. Thomas, Pa.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 11 a.m., at the Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, 2507 Pleasant Ridge Road, Needmore, Pa., where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of services. Pastor Frank Kocek and Pastor Roger Truax will officiate. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
