Paul Mellott

CW4 Paul Richard Mellott, U.S. Army (Ret), age 89, died on March 17, 2016 at Homewood at Crumland Farms, in Frederick, Md., where he was currently residing. He had formerly lived in Bowie and Hancock, Md., and Largo, FL., before taking up residence in Frederick.

Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., on December 20, 1926, he was a son of the late Paul Raymond and Alice Virginia Hovermill Mellott.

His wife, Marilynn Eliason McKinley Mellott, whom he married June 24, 1951, preceded him in death on February 9, 2006.

He graduated from Berkeley Springs High School in 1945 and Shepherd College in 1955, with BA and BS degrees. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Berlin crisis; and he was in the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 44 years.

He retired in May, 1982, after 33 years of service as an Investigator with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Department of Interior; and in 1986, from the U.S. Army Reserve, as a Chief Warrant Officer four; and in 1989, from the District Court of Maryland, where he served as Court Commissioner in Hagerstown and Hancock, Md.

He was an active member of the Hancock United Methodist Church, having served as a Sunday school teacher; trustee; lay member to the annual conference; finance committee member, and a member of the church choir until his move to Florida in 2005.

He was also an associate-member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, and later the Faith United Methodist Church, in Largo, Fl. For over 13 years he was active in the church choir there, during the winter months.

He was a member of James W. Bowers Lodge No. 173 AF & AM; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10502, both in Hancock, Md.; The Order of Eastern Star No. 77; and the American Legion Post 60, both in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; the Cumberland Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, in Cumberland, Md.; the Elks Lodge No. 684, in Frederick, Md.; and he served as President of the Maryland, Delaware and District of Columbia Elks Association from 1987 to 1988; and served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler-West from 1985 to 1986.

He is survived by three sons, Richard Paul Mellott and wife, Susan, of South Chesterfield, Va., Michael Lynn Mellott and wife, Kathleen Werle, of Highland, Md., and Patrick Arthur Mellott and wife, Kathleen Eccard, of Beltsville, Md.; two sisters, Nancy J. Mellott, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., and Patricia L. Mellott Harwood, of Landover Hills, Md.; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 3 nephews; and a niece.

In addition to his parents and wife, a sister, Mary Elizabeth Mellott Deadmon, of Largo, Fl., preceded him in death on July 15, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at the Hancock United Methodist Church, 170 West Main Street, Hancock, Md., on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Michael Bynum will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church Cemetery, on Exline Road in Hancock, with Military Honors conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Homewood at Crumland Farms, in Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the Hancock United Methodist Church on Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with Memorial Services being conducted by the Frederick Elks Lodge 684 at 4:00 p.m, and The Order of the Eastern Star No. 77 at 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hancock United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 168 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. 21750; or the Homewood Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, Md. 21795-0250; or to the charity of your choice.
