Lucy Sterner

Hancock, Maryland

Lucy Jane (Rupp) Sterner, age 68, passed away at her home in Hancock, Md., on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Born Saturday, January 22, 1949, in Allentown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Russell and Lillian Rupp.

Lucy graduated from Northwestern Lehigh High School, in New Tripoli, Pa. in 1966, and Hood College, in Frederick, Md., with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education/English, in 1970.

She was an English teacher at Southern Fulton High School until her retirement. She also held the position of assistant girls’ basketball coach at the school for twenty years.

A lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, Lucy served as a summer camp director for several years at Camp Mosey Wood, in the Poconos, and then at Camp Yankee Trails, in Stafford Springs, Ct. She enjoyed camping immensely, and made several life-long friends with whom she enjoyed camping.

An avid reader, board game player and animal advocate, Lucy loved her pets and hummingbirds, and truly enjoyed a great game of Backgammon or Skip-Bo, just as her mother did.

Lucy enjoyed traveling, family holidays, (even though she could never win the Easter paper hunt), and motorcycle rides. She just returned recently from her dream vacation in Hawaii with her sister and her closest friends.

Lucy is survived by her sister, Diane Cappa and husband, Rob, of Oley, Pa.; her daughter, Bethany Sterner-King and husband, Garret, of Washington, D.C.; and her son, Jordan and fiancé, Melissa Darmody, of Catonsville, Md.; also her companion, Misty Clatterbuck; and her close friends, Jill and Dan Delaney. She also had two nieces; one nephew; three grand-nieces; and one grandson on the way.

A viewing will be held at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, on Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Additionally, there will be a viewing from 9 until 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the Morgenland Church, in Orefield, Pa., where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment. Reverend Sally Zelker will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends Fur Life Rescue, P.O. Box 1024, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.
