Linda “Dean” Howell

January 23, 1945 – March 31, 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Linda “Dean” Howell, 81, of Hancock, Maryland, who was welcomed into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Dean departed peacefully in Frederick, Maryland, surrounded by her family’s love.

Born on January 23, 1945, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late William “Fred” Sr. and Helen (Dorrier) Hinckle. Dean spent her formative years in Hancock, where she married her high school sweetheart, raised three sons, and lovingly cared for her extended family. Before moving to Frederick County, she was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hancock, grounding her life in faith and service.

Dean devoted her life to her family and to her faith. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and dear friend whose warmth, generosity, and quiet strength touched all who knew her. She enjoyed her final decade in Frederick, where she shared a special bond with her granddaughter and her family.

Her early career was spent as a talented seamstress for London Fog Industries. She later embraced an adventurous second career as the owner and operator of three school buses in Washington County, proudly serving local families for many years until her well‑deserved retirement. Her strong work ethic, kind heart, and generous spirit were evident in everything she did.

Dean is survived by her sons, Kevin Howell (Elena) and Greg Howell (Kim); her daughter‑in‑law Vicky Howell; her special daughter‑in‑law Heather Howell; her granddaughters Bethani Howell (Kevin Waters), Katie Marro (Josh), Emily Howell, and Sydney Howell; step‑grandchildren Brandon and Emily Bane; and her beloved great‑grandchildren Jayen, John, Jenna, Karlie, Karmyn, and Hayden, each of whom brought her immense joy.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Elwood “Arlo” Howell; her son, Kenneth Howell; her parents, Fred and Helen Hinckle; her brothers William, Richard, and Gerald; and many other cherished family members who now welcome her with open arms.

A woman of deep faith, Dean chose to donate her body to science—an act that reflected her lifelong commitment to helping others. A private ceremony for family will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dean’s name to St. Jude’s or the Shriners Children’s.

Dean’s legacy of love, faith, and steadfast devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were blessed to share in her life. Her warmth and kindness will be deeply missed but fondly remembered.

Rest in peace, dearest Dean. Your legacy lives on.
