John William Norris, Jr., age 58, of Hancock, died on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown, Md.

Born July 27, 1955, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of Ellen Belle Payne Norris of Milford, Oh., and the late John William Norris, Sr.

He was a graduate of Hancock High School.

He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.

He had formerly been employed with the Town of Hancock as a police officer; he had owned and operated the former Potomac Outdoor Expeditions; and had been a substitute teacher for the Washington County Board of Education.

He was a member of the Tonoloway Rod & Gun Club for 42 years; a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post # 26 American Legion in Hancock; a member of the National Rifle Association; and the AARP. He had also been a volunteer for both Den 15 Cub Scouts, and Troop 15 Boy Scouts.

Besides his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Carol Ann Persinger Norris, whom he married on December 30, 1978; one son, Paul Norris and wife, Amanda, of Needmore, Pa; two daughters, Loucinda Schlotterbeck, of Cumberland, Md., and Michaela Waugh and husband, Robert, of Hagerstown, Md.; three grandchildren, Lauryn Unger, Courtney Schlotterbeck and Cayden Norris; three sisters, Virginia Jones and husband, Joe, and Barbara Hackathrone, all of Erie, Pa., and Debra Love and husband, Scott, of Milford, Oh.; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Miley, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Besides his father, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Darlene Miley.

Friends will be received on Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Hancock Assembly of God Church, 431 North Pennsylvania Ave. Hancock, Md., from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. 21750, to help defray expenses.
