John Paul “Jack” Murray, aged 85, died in Catonsville, Md., Thursday, October 4, with his daughter, Pamela Chilcoat and her husband, Joseph, by his side.

Jack Murray was born to Lawrence Andrew and Elva Gleatha Stotler Wachter Murray on July 11, 1927. He was christened on January 8, 1928, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Jack lived on West High Street, in Hancock, with his late wife, Zena Murray, who passed away in 1987. He  was a veteran of World War II, and served in Panama. He was a member, and past president of the Hancock Rotary Club; a Paul Harris Fellow; and a Meals on Wheels volunteer. He served on the zoning committee for the Town of Hancock; and was a C&O Canal volunteer. An avid canal cyclist and hiker, Jack was often seen walking through Hancock sporting his Oriole’s cap.

He is remembered as a funny, kind, and generous humanitarian by his daughter Pamela and her husband, Joseph; his granddaughters, Zena, Joanna, and Mary; his great-grandchildren, Inara, Camden, and Asher; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Leo, and Richard; his half-sisters Naomi “Sis’ Wachter Bishop, Hazel B. Wachter Faith, and Adelaide M. Wachter Jones; and half-brothers, Willard Reed “Bud” Wachter, and Charles Wachter.

A viewing will be held on Monday, October 8, at the Grove Funeral Home, in Hancock from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Funeral Home, on Tuesday, October 9, at 11:00 a.m.

Jack will be buried next to his wife at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, in Hagerstown, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Friends and family will remember Jack’s life at the Park and Dine Restaurant, in Hancock, following the interment.
