Evangeline Zimmerman Dyer Pelton, age 96, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 7, 2016 in Hagerstown, Md.

She was born August 23, 1919, in Fulton County, Pa., the daughter of the late Walter and Pleasant Zimmerman Dyer, and the widow of C. Hoover Pelton.

She was a graduate of the Hancock High School class of 1935, at the age of 15, and was the last surviving member of that class.  She was a graduate of Shippensburg Teachers College, class of 1938, at the age of 18.  Her first teaching position was in Warfordsburg, Pa. Later she taught in Fulton County, Pa.; also Washington and Garrett Counties, in Md.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Hoover Pelton on July 20, 1996; a sister, Geraldine French; and a brother, who died at birth.

She is survived by two sons, Carl Pelton and wife, Carolyn, of Warfordsburg, Pa., and Gary Pelton and wife, Sherry, of Ft. Collins, Co.; a daughter, Carol Pelton, with whom she resided in Hancock, Md.; a brother, Walter “Buddy” Dyer and wife, Marsha, of Mercersburg, Pa.; grandchildren, Bill Pelton and wife, Dariel, of Warfordsburg,; Christy Hixon and husband, Chris, of Clear Spring, Md.; Danny Pelton and wife, Deanna, of Warfordsburg,; Carrie Pelton, of Loveland, Co.; and Ike Pelton and wife, Heather, of Ft. Collins, Co.; great-grandchildren, Colleen, Elizabeth, Cole and Emilee Hixon, of Clear Spring, Md., Ethan, Dayton, Logan and Kaitlin Pelton, of Warfordsburg, Corbin and Blake Gutherie, of Loveland, Co., Evan, Deacon and Dayne Pelton, of Warfordsburg, and Mason and Blair Pelton, of Ft. Collins, Co.

In 1959, she and her family moved to Oakland, Md. when Hoover was transferred to the office of The H-P Stores, Inc. in Mt. Lake Park, Md.  Following the death of her husband she moved to Reston, Va. to reside with her daughter Carol.  In 2013, she and Carol moved back to Hancock. While in Hancock, she spent many hours with Leo Murray identifying old photos, and relating the history of Hancock. She had a brilliant memory, and loved to talk and share memories of Hancock.

Throughout her life she was active in her church; the Scouting program; as well as school activities. She was on the founding committee of the Hancock Cub Pack 15, and she was known in the community for her cooking and baking, especially her homemade rolls and bread. She loved to knit, crochet, and braid rugs. One of her hobbies was caring for her many African Violets. Evangeline loved playing scrabble and attending her great-grandchildren’s many activates.

She was a member on the Hancock United Methodist Church. Previously, she was a member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, in Oakland, Md., and the Floris United Methodist Church, in Reston, Va.

Funeral services will be held at the Hancock United Methodist Church, on Friday, February 12, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Michael Bynum officiating, Burial will follow in the St. Thomas’ Episcopal Cemetery, in Hancock.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 6:00 p.m.until 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, HUMC, or the charity of your choice.
