Charles Herbert Baum, Jr., age 93, died at his home in Warfordsburg, Pa., on Sunday, March 5, 2017. He was born on October 3, 1923, in Baltimore, Md.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy years, Betty J. (Milke) Baum; his mother, Florence A. Baum; and sisters, Elizabeth Trempe, Florence McDonald, and Eva Romm.

He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne L. Ward and her husband, Wayne C. Ward, of Warfordsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles loved his family, cars, Christmas trees, and his beloved cabin, Tall Spruce Acres.

Charlie, as many called him, received a Certificate of Merit from the Baltimore News-Post and Baltimore Sunday American, in 1939, for outstanding achievements in salesmanship, alertness and perseverance. He saved enough money during his newspaper delivery days in northwest Baltimore to buy his first car.

He was a Master Mason of Highland Lodge No. 184, where he received his 60-year Masonic Service award.

He served in the U.S. Army Air corps, 8th Air Force, during WW ll. He spent 2 ½ years in England, France, and Germany. He received the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism at a bomber station in England on February 3, 1944.

He retired in 1972 from the U.S. Army Intelligence Command at Fort Holabird in Dundalk, Md. as Chief of the Civilian Guard Force.

Charles later worked at the Eastern Vocational School in Essex, Md., as a lab assistant and substitute teacher. He retired from there.

A Memorial Service, to celebrate both Charles’ and Betty’s lives, will be held at the Hancock United Methodist Church on April 17, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Michael Bynum will officiate.
