Billy Lee Ward

Billy Lee Ward, 95, passed away, Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, MD. Born July 18, 1930, in Buck Valley, Fulton County, PA, he was the son of the late Amos A. and Ora E. (Scriever) Ward.

He joined the United States Army as a young man and fought in the Korean War. July 1950-July 1951, he served as 1st Sergeant and was part of the Co. D. 3rd Engineer Combat Battalion, (Bronze Star, Five Battle Stars). Some highlights of his military career included his service in Germany and at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY where he instructed cadets.

After retiring from the Army, he worked as a manager for Pittman’s grocery store, a manager for Gulf, Warfordsburg, PA, mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, Warfordsburg, PA, and employee of Sinclair Cattle Company, Warfordsburg, PA.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hancock, MD.

He loved giving service. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and locally served as President for a time. He also served 60 years as a Mason (James W. Bowers Lodge No. 173), having achieved Master Mason status in 1960. He enjoyed traveling stateside and abroad with his wife, listening to country music, and farming, etc.

He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Madeline M. (Hendershot) Ward, Warfordsburg, PA and one son, Jeffrey G. Ward (The Villages, FL).

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons: Stuart L. Ward, Steven C. Ward; five brothers, Hayes E. Ward, Herbert W. Ward, Albert L. Ward, and Eugene M. Ward, and Clifford G. Ward; seven sisters, Janet H. Schetrompf, Lena M. (Peg) Yonker, Dorothy L. Shank, Infant, Betty F. Fischer, Naomi D. Bohrer, and J. June Ziler.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 10, at 11 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 200 Douglas Street, Hancock, MD.

At 12:30 pm, a Graveside Service and military tribute will follow at the Buck Valley Methodist Church Cemetery at 6600 Buck Valley Rd, Warfordsburg, PA. Military honors will be provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
