Betty (Cunningham) Barnhart, 93, died on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Village of Robinwood Assisted Living facility, in Hagerstown, Md.

Born Tuesday, August 7, 1923, in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Esta (Hart) Cunningham; and the widow of her husband, Henry Herman Barnhart, whom she married on May 11, 1946, and who died on February 25, 1999.

She was a 1941 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and graduated from the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She worked as a registered nurse at the Washington County Hospital, in Hagerstown, Md., and the War Memorial Hospital, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

She attended the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Hagerstown, and previously attended St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, in Hancock, with her husband before his death.

She was a member of the Hancock Democratic Club; the Hancock Homemakers; and the Hancock chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Melinda Golden, in Hancock, and Stephanie B. Foy and husband, Kevin, of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Bernie Golden and wife, Nicole, of Hancock, Sara Golden, of Goshen, Ind., Katie Wallace and husband, Allan, of Kensington, Md., and Meghan Martin and husband, Paul, of Alexandria, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Deanna and Mason Golden, of Hancock; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, William H. Cunningham; and a sister, Sara L. Lechlider.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 15, 2017, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, and on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 2 East High Street, Hancock, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Brian Shoda and Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at the Tonoloway Cemetery. In keeping with Betty's wishes, she was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in her memory, to the Washington County Humane Society, PO Box 367, Maugansville, Md. 21767, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Road, Ste. D, Timonium, Md. 21093.
