Basil Pittman

Basil Eugene Pittman, Sr., age 79 years 11 months and 19 days, of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at his home.

Born Thursday, March 13, 1930 in Kansas City, MO., he was the son of the late Harry E. Pittman, Sr. and Lillian E. (Surber) Pittman.

He was a veteran of the USMC, serving during the Korean War. He retired in 1984 from Letterkenny Army Depot.

He was a member of the Damascus Christian Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Lee (Mellott) Pittman, whom he married June 11, 1952 in Hagerstown, MD.; one daughter, Carol L. Exline, of Big Cove Tannery, PA.; one son, Basil E. Pittman, Jr. of Newburg, PA.; three sisters, Juanita Harmison of Berkeley Springs, WV., Virginia Kinsley of Pensacola, FL., Jo Ann Thomas of Dunedin, FL.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Howard Pittman, Claude H. Pittman, Richard Pittman, Harry Pittman, Jr., Raymond Pittman, William Pittman and Donald Pittman.

A service was held Sunday, March 7, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at Damascus Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, PA.  Rev. Loy A. Garber officiated. Burial, with a military graveside service by the Tri-State Honor Guard, was in the Antioch Christian Cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, Hancock, MD., and at the church on Sunday, from 1-2 p.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home was open 2-8 p.m. on Saturday.
